Surrounded by the provinces of Denizli, Burdur and Antalya, Fethiye is the largest district in the province of Muğla, after Bodrum, with a population of 157 thousand 745 people and 41 neighborhoods. Located on the Teke Peninsula in the southwest of Anatolia, the district has a surface area of 875 square kilometers.
Fethiye, which is believed to have been founded by the Sun God Apollo, was named Telmessos during the Lycian period. B.C. The city, which came under the domination of the Persians in the 6th century, was taken by Alexander the Great in the 4th century, and although it came under the rule of Egyptian King Pthalomus for a short time, it came under the rule of the Roman Empire. During this period, the name of the city, which was Telmessos, was changed to Meğri (Makri), which means “far away land” in Greek. Meğri, popularly known as “five districts”, joined the Ottoman Empire in 1424 and became a district of Menteşe Liva. 11 years after the Republic was declared, it was connected to Muğla and named Fethiye in memory of Pilot Fethi Bey, the first Turkish air martyr.
Although the tourism sector, especially the adventure sports it has become a brand for, is one of Fethiye’s most important sources of income, the district is also known for its success in the agriculture and industry sectors. Fethiye Port, one of our developed ports in passenger and cargo transportation, contributes to increasing the dynamism of the district.
